Student rejects Oxford University

It's refreshing to hear about people thinking for themselves and not being in awe of stuffy national institutions. Oxford University might well be one of the best universities in the world but it is often criticized for its admissions: such as taking very few black people; too many public school students; the Laura Spence scandal where a comprehensive school student was rejected despite getting 5 As at A level.

Elly Nowell is a 19-year old trainee barista at Starbucks who applied to read Law at Magdalen College. She withdrew her application after her interview, noting that the "grand formal settings" and "traditions and rituals" tend to favor public school applicants, whilst intimidating state school applicants.

Nowell wittily imitated the university's rejection letters by writing that she realized the admissions tutors "may be disappointed by this decision, but you were in competition with many fantastic universities". She said the university "did not quite meet the standard".  Meanwhile she has accepted a place at University College London.  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-16604050
