Costa Concordia captain tripped and fell into a lifeboat

I've heard some excuses in my time, but (if true) the captain of the capsized Costa Concordia cruise ship saying that he "tripped and fell into a lifeboat" instead of staying on board to help the remaining passengers to safety, really takes the cake.
