Longer ago than I care to remember my grandfather said to me: "people go into politics for three reasons -- either because they are Narcissists; or they like the sound of their own voice; or a desire to feather their own nest". Unfortunately I think all three of these applied to the disgraced former State Governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich, who entered a federal prison in Colorado today to begin a 14-year sentence for corruption, including an attempt to sell or trade President Obama's vacated Senate seat. [Blagojevich was convicted last year of 18 corruption charges.]

The inevitable tell-all biography will no doubt follow, written by Rod or wife Patti, or perhaps both of them. Her portrayal as one of her husband's most ardent supporters in his elaborate "pay-to-play" schemes caused the Chicago Tribune to liken her to "Lady Macbeth". The Times of London also drew parallels between Patti Blagojevich and Lady Macbeth, citing transcripts of phone conversations in which she told “her husband, in the coarsest terms, what to do.” In the Shakespeare play, the Macbeths’ ambitions eventually unraveled their relationship. Modern-day observers believe that the Blagojevich marriage will remain intact. “I think they're close as a couple and obviously have a lot of things in common,” Raymond Pijon, Patti Blagojevich’s lawyer, told the Chicago Sun-Times.
