In 1912, the city of Tokyo, Japan, gave a gift of 3,000 cherry blossom trees to Washington, DC. Rooted strongly and surviving outside elements, the trees have withstood the test of time. The National Cherry Blossom Festival runs from March 20 – April 27, 2012.
